Bees Hand Kernels Sixth-Straight Loss

BURLINGTON, IOWA - The Kernels lost 6-2 at Burlington on Thursday night as their losing streak reached six games. The Burlington Bees snapped a seven-game losing streak with the win.

The Kernels were held to four hits and did not record a hit after the fourth inning. Victor Alcantara (1-2) pitched five hitless innings for Burlington in relief, closing out the win for the Bees. The right-hander walked three and struck out four while keeping the Kernels off the scoreboard.

Felix Jorge (2-4) made the start for the Kernels and took the loss. He went 4 1/3 innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits. Jorge struck out two and walked four.

The Kernels took the first lead of the game in the second inning when Bo Altobelli's RBI double down the left field line plated Bryan Haar, who singled to left with one away.

A fast-moving, but steady, rain shower came through in the bottom of the second inning, causing a delay of 25 minutes. Both starting pitchers - Jorge for the Kernels and Harrison Cooney for Burlington - were able to return. The first batter after action resumed was Burlington's Erick Salcedo, and he singled home Stephen McGee to tie the game 1-1.

The Bees took a 2-1 lead in the third inning. This time, McGee's hit scored the run as his singled plated Eric Aguilera, who had singled to begin the inning.

The Kernels tied the game 2-2 in the fourth inning. Altobelli and Michael Quesada drew back to back walks before Carlos Avila's RBI double scored Altobelli to knot the score. That was the last hit the Kernels recorded on the evening.

The Bees stranded 10 runners on base through the first four innings, but they exploded for four runs in the fifth inning to take a 6-2 advantage. Ranyelmy Mendoza tripled to start the rally and quickly scored when McGee's RBI double went to left. Two batters later, Jorge exited the game. Yorman Landa entered and immediately allowed a RBI single off the bat of Salcedo to put Burlington up 4-2. Later in the inning, McGee and Hinshaw scored when Aguilera reached on a two-base throwing error by Kernels second baseman Carlos Avila, That made the score 6-2, and it was the final tally of the night.

Burlington starter Harrison Cooney pitched the first four innings for the Bees. He allowed two runs on four hits while striking out six and walking three. For the Kernels, Landa went a total of 2 2/3 innings and allowed one unearned run on one hit. He struck out one and walked none. Jared Wilson allowed a leadoff double in the eighth but then struck out the side.

The Kernels continue the commuter series at Burlington, the Midwest League affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. RHP Aaron Slegers (4-0, 3.27) gets the start for the Kernels while Burlington counters with RHP Ryan Etsell (2-1, 4.55)

The Kernels return home on Monday, May 19 to take on the Beloit Snappers, the Midwest League affiliate of the Oakland Athletics. It will be Dollar Monday.
