Iowa Cubs News Release
Papillion, NE - The Iowa Cubs (8-14) set season-highs for homers and runs in a 10-6 win over the Omaha Storm Chasers (14-9) at Werner Park this afternoon. With the win, the Cubs earn a split of this four-game series and finish 3-5 on this road trip.
The Cubs struck early and built a 7-0 lead after two innings against Storm Chasers' starter Ryan Verdugo. Logan Watkins led off the game with a triple to right-center field and scored on a groundout by Brett Jackson. After a walk to Ian Stewart, Ryan Sweeney belted his third homer of the series, and his team-leading sixth of the season, to extend the Cubs' lead to 3-0. In the second inning, Alberto Gonzalez reached and went to second on a throwing error by Brandon Wood at shortstop. After a strikeout, Jackson got one up in to the wind to left and the ball carried over the wall for his first home run of the season. After another walk to Stewart and a two-out double by Brent Lillibridge, Brian Bogusevic laced a single to right that drove in two and completed the early onslaught.
The Storm Chasers broke through against Cubs' starter Brooks Raley in the fourth inning. With two outs, Chad Tracy reached on an infield hit, Adam Moore walked, and Wood lined a double to the wall in left-center that cut the Cubs' lead to 7-2. Brent Lillibridge answered back with a leadoff homer in the fifth for the Cubs final run against Verdugo (1-2). The lefty was charged with eight runs (five earned) on nine hits in 4.2 innings, setting career-highs for runs and home runs allowed in a game.
The Storm Chasers got into the home run derby when Xavier Nady and Moore connected on solo shots in the bottom of the sixth, but Raley (3-2) finished the inning before turning the game over to his bullpen. Raley has won three straight starts and posted a 3.12 ERA (6ER/17.1IP) in those games.
The Cubs added their final two runs in the top of the seventh off veteran right-hander Dan Wheeler. Bogusevic led off the inning with his first home run of the season and tied his season-high with his third hit of the game. Bogusevic has the league's longest hitting streak at 13 straight games and is batting .500 (22-for-44) with four doubles, a homer, five RBI, 10 runs scored, and five stolen bases during this streak. The Cubs would load the bases and Wheeler walked Stewart to force in the 10th run of the afternoon.
Hisanori Takahashi and Zach Putnam each pitched a scoreless inning in relief for the Cubs. Rafael Dolis finished the ninth, but allowed a two-out, two-run homer to David Lough before ending the game.
The Cubs return home to start an eight-game homestand with the first of four against the Round Rock Express tomorrow night at 6:35 at Principal Park. RH Nick Struck (0-2, 4.80) will start for the Cubs against former Iowa RH Randy Wells (0-4, 5.14) for the Express. The gates will open at 5:05 and fans are encouraged to dress up for our "Halfway to Halloween" promotion. There will be candy for the kids and three $100 prizes for the best-dressed fans. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 and streamed at iowacubs.com with the pre-game show starting at 6:15.
