Cruz to temporarily return to Triple-A
May 10, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
The Cedar Rapids Kernels announced today that right-handed pitcher Rafael Cruz will temporarily join the Triple-A Salt Lake Bees. He will not be replaced on the Kernels roster.
Cruz began the season with the Bees on a temporary assignment out of spring training and had no record with an 11.81 ERA in five appearances. He joined the Kernels earlier this month to .ll the opening in the Kernels bullpen left by the departure of disabled right-hander Jim West. Cruz has made two appearances for the Kernels with both coming against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers during last week's series at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Cruz has no record in his two games and boasts a respectable 3.86 ERA.
Cruz will be .lling in for former Kernels hurler Steven Shell (2002) while he is back with the Bees. The Salt Lake right-hander is currently battling kidney stones.
The departure of Cruz leaves the Kernels active roster at 24 men, one below the maximum allowed under Midwest League rules. The non-drafted free agent from Veracruz, Mexico, is expected to rejoin the Kernels once Shell overcomes his bout of stones, though no timetable has been set for his return.
The Kernels are currently in Dayton, OH, where they are in the middle of a four-game series with the Dayton Dragons. From Dayton the Kernels will head to Clinton, IA, for four games before opening an eight-game homestand on Tuesday, May 16th against the Swing of the Quad Cities.
