Kane County Cougars News Release

Lansing, MI - The Kane County Cougars lost 10-4 to the Lansing Lugnuts on Wednesday afternoon at Oldsmobile Park. They led 2-0 right away but lost the lead early in the game and never recovered.

Mike Massaro led off the game with a walk against Lugnuts pitcher Kristian Bell, and Nick Blasi got hit by a pitch to put two men on base. Frank Martinez delivered a run-scoring single for a quick 1-0 lead, and Blasi scored on a double play to make it 2-0.

The Lugnuts got two in the first against Cougars starter Jeff Gray, three in the second and one in the third to knock out the pitcher with an early exit and a 6-2 Kane County deficit. Gray (2-3) lasted 2 2/3 innings, allowed six runs -- five earned -- on six hits, walked three and fanned three.

Jose Pineda inched the Cougars closer with a two-out, fourth-inning home run, but the Lugnuts responded against reliever Ron Madej with a tally in the bottom portion. Steve Kleen's fielder's choice in the sixth brought home Blasi for a 7-4 count, but again Lansing came up with three more in the seventh against Madej, John Herrera and Joe Piekarz for the 10-4 final. Bell (3-1) grabbed the win, and Jordan Timm saved his first game with four relief innings.

The Cougars (18-15) and Lugnuts (21-12) conclude the four-game series Thursday night at 6:05 CDT. Jason Ray (1-1, 4.85) is scheduled to face Lansing right-hander Russ Savickas (1-0, 2.67).
