MWL1 Quad Cities River Bandits

Swing win as Roth keeps streak alive

May 10, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

Midwest League home run leader Randy Roth owns the longest hitting streak in the minor leagues this season, as his 11th home run of the year helped Quad Cities to a 6-2 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at Fox Cities Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. Starter Kyle Sadlowski did his part, allowing only one run in six more strong innings to pick up the win.

Quad Cities (15-18) has won two of the first three games of the series, and will look for their first series win since April 15 at Peoria on Thursday. Wisconsin (15-18) falls back into a tie for fifth place with the Swing, only 3.5 games behind the Peoria Chiefs, who will play later tonight.

Already with a 2-0 lead and one out in the fifth inning, Roth swung on an 0-1 pitch and lifted a towering fly ball beyond the wall in left field. The slugging third baseman increased his league-leading totals to 11 home runs and 32 RBI, staying in the ballgame despite crumbling to the ground after being hit by a pitch in the foot in the bottom of the third.

In his 100th career game, Roth extended his hitting streak to 19 games with the fifth-inning blast. The streak is the longest this season by any affiliated minor league player, as he surpassed the previous high of 18 registered by Stephen Drew (AAA-Tucson) and J.R. House (AA-Corpus Christi). The 10th-rounder out of Southeastern Louisiana State University is hitting .364 during the stretch, which includes eight home runs and 21 RBI. Through his first 100 professional ballgames, Roth boasts a .295 batting average with 21 home runs and 73 RBI.

For the fourth straight game the Swing struck first. Matt Wilkerson drew a one-out walk and proceeded to steal second. Brandon Yarbrough followed with a liner into right-center, and Wilkerson raced home to beat the play at the plate. The throw home allowed Yarbrough to advance to second base, and he would come home one batter later when Casey Rowlett lined a single back up the middle to put Quad Cities out in front, 2-0.

Quad Cities got some insurance in the top of the ninth inning against Timber Rattlers closer Edgar Guaramato, who had allowed only one earned run and five hits on the season heading into the frame. Leading 3-1, Rowlett doubled into the left field corner to lead off, and came home from third base with one out when Luis Cotto's blooper carried over the drawn-in infield into right field. The next batter was Colby Rasmus, who planted a 2-2 pitch beyond the wall in straightaway center field, extending the lead to 6-1 on the first longball yielded by Guaramato this season. Rasmus raised his batting average to .299 with a 2-for-4 day, and has five home runs and 19 driven in on the year.

Kyle Sadlowski (2-0) was lights out again on the mound for Quad Cities. After issuing back-to-back walks to open the game, the righthander out of Kutztown University retired the next nine men he faced in order, and 14 of the next 15 batters that came to the plate. Sadlowski - who has made three starts in a row - did not allow a run until the sixth inning, snapping a stretch of 15 consecutive scoreless frames that dated back to his last relief appearance on April 24 in Fort Wayne. The swingman in the Quad Cities rotation fanned two and walked two, allowing one run on four hits in six innings of work.

Brian Stitt (2) picked up the save in his second game in a Swing uniform, both of which have been four-out appearances. Scott Vander Weg, in his first outing as a setup man, and Danny Borne combined for 1.2 scoreless innings of relief, bridging the gap from Sadlowski to Stitt.

Southpaw Paul Fagan (1-3) was the loser for Wisconsin, allowing three runs on five hits in five innings. Fagan struck out a season-high six batters, issuing two walks and yielding the home run to Roth.
