West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK - Two walks and an error led to a two-run double by Erik Lis in the top of the 16th inning as Beloit shutout the Whitecaps, 2-0. It was the first time this season that the Whitecaps have been shutout.
The pitcher's duel matches the longest home game in Whitecaps history and is the third time West Michigan has played a 16-inning game at home during the regular season. The last 16 inning game at Fifth Third Ballpark was a 7-5 loss to Kane County in game 4 of the 2004 Midwest League Championship Series.
Twice the Whitecaps have played 17 innings and both games were wins: June 27, 1996 at Beloit and July 11, 2005 at Clinton.
In the top of the 16th inning on Wednesday, Jake Baxter issued a two-out walk to Snappers third baseman Steve Tolleson. On the next pitch Tolleson tried to steal second but despite an on-target throw from catcher Dusty Ryan, Tolleson was safe when second baseman Will Rhymes dropped the ball. Tolleson was ruled caught stealing, an error was charged to Rhymes and the inning continued.
Caleb Moore then walked, which brought Lis to the plate for the game-winning hit.
The Whitecaps used five pitchers to reach the 15th inning: Starter Ramon Garcia threw five innings, Matt Rusch 3, Ricky Steik 3, Orlando Perdomo 1, and Baxter threw 3.2 shutout innings before he allowed the two unearned runs in the 16th. Gibbs Wilson faced the final batter of the final inning for the Whitecaps.
On the other side of the ledger, Beloit starter Brian Duensing helped set the tone with nine shutout innings on the mound, which is believed to be the longest outing for any Midwest League pitcher this season.
Duensing was followed by Adam Hawes who pitched 3 innings in his first appearance following a stint on the disabled list. David Shinskie followed with three innings to earn the win and Yohan Pino shut down West Michigan in the 16th to pick up his first save.
The Whitecaps did not move a runner past second base at any point of the game. Caleb Moor tripled in the first inning for Beloit, but no other runners advanced beyond second for the Snappers until the game-winning hit.
Neither team committed an error until the 16th inning. No Whitecaps walked until Mike Hollimon was intentionally walked in the 11th inning. Only one Snappers batter walked (in the 4th) until the back-to-back walks in the 16th.
Maybin Watch: Tigers top draft pick (2005) Cameron Maybin did not play in Wednesday's game.
Current Stats: .330 average; 7 2B; 4 3B; 1 HR; 19 RBI; 6 SB.
End of the Run: The Whitecaps conclude a stretch of 16 out of 20 games at home with the last of the four game series against Beloit on Thursday. West Michigan will try to take 3-of-4 from the Snappers. LHP Ryan Mullins (1-0, 4.60) will be on the mound for Beloit against Whitecaps LHP Erik Averill (1-2, 4.86). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. The Whitecaps Pre Game Show begins at 6:25 p.m. on 1340 AM WBBL and at wbbl.com.
