Lake Erie Crushers News Release

Florence, KY-The Lake Erie Crushers took another giant step towards solidifying a playoff spot on Thursday night as they beat the Florence Freedom by the final of 5-4 at Champion Window Field. The victory gave the Crushers a three game sweep of the Freedom and puts them just a half game behind the Kalamazoo Kings for first place in the East Division of the Frontier League with just three games to play. The Crushers also maintain their lead for the top spot in the Frontier League's Wild Card chase.

The Crushers drew first blood on the Freedom in the second inning as Tyler Johnson scored from third on an error by Florence's Johnny Welch. Eddie Tisdale also scored on an RBI groundout by Wayne Bond. Bond extended the Crushers lead to 3-0 in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly that plated Gordon Gronkowski.

Florence tied the game in the bottom of the fourth against Cardoza Tucker on a two-run homer by Ryan Basham and an RBI single by Justin Pickett. But the game would not stay tied for long as Johnson slammed a two-run home run to right field with two outs in the fifth to put the Crushers back in the lead by a 5-3 count. Johnson now has five homers on the season. Florence added a run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI double by Basham.

The Crushers bullpen would relieve Tucker in the sixth as Josh Faiola, Ronnie Morales, Cristobal Mata, and J.J. Pacella combined to throw four scoreless innings. Pacella struck out Jay Johnson with the tying run at second in the ninth to earn his ninth save of the season. Tucker earned the victory, going five innings allowing four runs on five hits to up his record to 4-0.

The Crushers now will return home to Avon to play their final series of the regular season starting on Friday night against the Midwest Sliders. First pitch at All Pro Freight Stadium is set for 7:05 P.M. with Brent Lysander slated to start for the Crushers.
