Windy City ThunderBolts News Release
Guillermo Martinez had three hits, drove in three runs and scored four more as the Windy City ThunderBolts scored a season high in runs, downing the Southern Illinois Miners 17-4.
The win moved Windy City within a game of both Southern Illinois and River City with three games to play.
The ThunderBolts wasted no time in jumping on Miners' starter, Ryan Bird as they tagged the 2008 FL Pitcher of the year for five runs on four hits including RBI singles from J. T. Restko and Kraig Binick.
After Windy City was set down in order in the second, they went back to work in the third, batting around for the second time in the game and chasing Bird from the contest after just 2.2 innings, the second shortest start of his pro career. Contributing to the third inning effort was a three-run homer off the bat of Guillermo Martinez and an RBI double from Dan Jordan.
Southern Illinois plated a run on a Jereme Milons double in the fifth, but the ThunderBolts came back unfazed as Martinez led off the sixth with a walk. Robert Perry came up and banged his fifth homer of the season over the rightfield wall for a 13-1 Windy City lead.
The Miners plated single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth, but in they were merely cosmetic as the Bolts easily were able to hang on for the win, adding two runs of their own in the ninth on an RBI single from Bryan Cook and a double from Tyler Farrar to cement the final score.
Matt Jernstad (7-4) picked up the win allowing one earned run on five hits with seven strikeouts. Ryan Bird (9-7) took the loss giving up nine runs, the most of any start of his professional career.
Windy City now heads to Rockford for the final three games of the regular season. Ricky Meinhold (4-2, 3.43) will start for the Bolts. Windy City will host the Chicago Blackhawks Alumni softball game on September 7 at 4:00 p.m. It is a 16" softball game between the Blackhawks Alumni and the Chicago Fire and Police Departments. Stan Mikita, Dennis Savard and Tony Esposito are among the alumni who will be in attendance. Tickets to the game are $12 and are available at the Standard Bank Stadium box office.
