Crushers Pitching Shuts Down Freedom
September 2, 2009 - Frontier League (FL)
Lake Erie Crushers News Release
Florence, KY-Alberto Rolon gave Lake Erie six strong innings, and the Crushers bullpen did the rest in a 3-1 victory on Wednesday night at Champion Window Field. The Crushers with the win remain in the top spot in the race for the Frontier League's Wild Card spot, and are only a game and a half behind Florence for first place in the East Division with four games to play.
Rolon, a rookie from Sonoma State University, allowed a run on five hits in his six innings of work. He struck out five and walked just one batter to improve his record to 4-1 on the season. Cristobal Mata, Ronnie Morales, and J.J. Pacella combined to throw three scoreless innings out of the bullpen, as Pacella got the final four outs for his eighth save of the season.
The Crushers got to Florence starter Allan Donato in the second inning thanks to an error on Freedom shortstop Tim Grogan that scored Arden McWilliams to give Lake Erie a 1-0 lead. In the third inning, Tyler Johnson hit a two-run homer to left field off of Donato to open up the Crushers lead to 3-0. It was Johnson's fourth home run of the season. Donato was taken out of the game after the home run, and the Freedom bullpen would hold the Crushers hitless for the remainder of the game.
Florence scored their only run in the sixth inning on an RBI double by Grogan that scored Matt Stiffler. The Freedom loaded the bases in the eighth inning, but strikeouts by Morales and Pacella ended the threat.
The Crushers improve to 54-37 with the victory and will go for the sweep of the Freedom on Thursday night at Champion Window Field. Cardoza Tucker will make the start for Lake Erie against Jordan Towns.
The Lake Erie Crushers are the newest expansion team in the Frontier League, an independent professional league with 12 teams throughout the Midwest.
