Southern Illinois Miners News Release
MARION, Ill. - Brad Goldsmith's four RBIs helped the Southern Illinois Miners increase their lead in the West Division to two games, with a 9-3 victory over Windy City Wednesday night at Rent One Park.
Goldsmith entered the game in the seventh inning to pinch-hit for his high school teammate Adam Hale. Goldsmith gave the Miners some temporary breathing room with a two-out single into right field that scored Jereme Milons and Tony Roth, extending the Miners lead to 5-1. Windy City came back in the top of the eighth inning with two runs of their own, closing the gap to 5-2. Southern Illinois blew the game open in the bottom of the eighth when the Miners struck gold again. Goldsmith's base-hit scored Will Block and Jereme Milons, putting the game out of reach, 9-3.
Miners starter Danny Zeffiro showed no signs of folding under the playoff pressure. He threw 6.2 solid innings of six-hit ball. Zeffiro allowed just one unearned run, struck out five and walked a pair. Four of the six Windy City leadoff hitters that Zeffiro faced reached base, but only one of those runners would score.
Southern Illinois pushed a run across the plate to start the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Tony Roth walked and stole second. A few pitches later, he attempted to steal third base wheh ThunderBolts starter Dustin Pease committed a throwing error that allowed Roth to score. Joey Metropoulos made it a 2-0 ballgame with a solo blast to lead off the fourth inning. It was Metropoulos' 30th homer of the season. Later in the fourth, Andrew Sweet's double scored Landon Camp from first, extending the lead, 3-0.
Adam Revelette and Jake McMurran combined for two innings of relief work. McMurran allowed two inherited runners to score, both of them charged to Revelette.
The Miners go for the sweep against the ThunderBolts on Thursday evening at Rent One Park. Windy City will try to stop the bleeding by sending lefty Matt Jernstad (6-4, 2.39) to the hill, while Southern Illinois will trot out ace Ryan Bird (9-6, 2.96). It is the final Xtreme Theme Thursday, Motorcycle Madness II sponsored by Black Diamond Harley Davidson.
