River City Rascals News Release
O'FALLON, MO - Ernie Banks smashed two home runs and drove in three runs as the Rascals downed the Otters 6-3 Wednesday night at T.R. Hughes Ballpark. River City improved to 10-1 against Evansville and will go for the sweep tomorrow night in O'Fallon.
The Rascals (53-37) turned a 1-0 deficit after a half inning into a 3-1 lead on two home runs. Scott Houin led off the game for the second straight night with a homer and Banks followed with a two run blow into the bullpen for a 3-1 lead.
Banks led off the fourth with his second long ball of the night, taking a Nick Utley (4-6) pitch again to right field to put the Rascals up 4-1. Banks extended his hitting streak to six games and has now hit safely in 17 of his 19 games with River City.
Josh Lowey (9-2) won his team best ninth game and tossed five frames, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits with six strikeouts.
Frank Meade knocked in the first Evansville run in the first against Lowey on a single, which was the lone earned run of the night allowed by Rascals pitching. The Otters picked up two unearned runs with single tallies in the fifth and sixth innings.
Jason Lowey worked a scoreless ninth for his Frontier League leading 22nd save and Brent Solich threw a scoreless eighth, bumping his scoreless inning streak up to 13.2 frames.
Joe Chavarria picked up his first professional home run in the fifth and JoJo Batten rounded out the Rascal scoring with a single later in the frame.
The Otters (28-64) received eight innings from Utley, but stranded ten runners on after leaving 15 on base in last night's setback. Utley allowed four home runs and six runs in his first complete game of the season.
River City looks for the sweep tomorrow as the Rascals maintained their lock on the fourth and final playoff spot with the victory tonight. Jake Laber (8-4) will attempt to match Lowey's nine wins opposite John Ducey (3-10). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
