Lake Erie Crushers News Release
FLORENCE, Ky. - The Lake Erie Crushers saw their five game winning streak come to an end on Sunday evening, as they dropped a 5-2 decision on the road against the Florence Freedom.
The loss for the Crushers (31-26) was their first in nearly a week, and marks just the second time that they've dropped a series opener this month, while the victory for Florence, gives them four in seven tries against the Crushers this season.
The Crushers squandered opportunities to score early on, leaving four on base over the first two innings. They left runners on second and third in the top of the first inning, and stranded runners at the corners in the second.
Florence snapped a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth inning. David Harris started the inning with a base hit, and stole second base before scoring on Edwin Padua's two out triple to right field.
The Crushers answered in the next half inning to take their only lead of the contest. Daniel Bowman stroked a one out base hit, before Brandon Mathes issued back-to-back two out walks to Robby Kuzdale and Brian Erie, loading the bases for Adrian Ortiz. Ortiz came through with a two out single to right field, scoring Bowman and Kuzdale to give the Crushers a 2-1 advantage.
The Freedom didn't wait long to answer, tying the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Patrick Arnold executed a terrific display of damage control. The bases were loaded with nobody out, when he induced a 4-6-3 double play, which plated the tying run, and got himself out of the inning after retiring Victor Gomez on a groundout.
John Malloy put the Freedom back in front in the bottom of the seventh inning. Padua reached on an infield single with one down, and scored the go ahead run on John Malloy's double down the left field line.
Florence added a pair of big insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Jim Jacquot started the inning with a double, and came home moments later on Drew Rundle's two-run blast.
Jorge Marban (1-3) scored the victory, after holding the Crushers scoreless over two hitless innings of relief. Brennan Flick (1) tossed a scoreless ninth inning to grab the save, while Ben Klapfczynski (2-1) suffered the loss, after allowing a run on two hits over one inning of action. Arnold started the game for the Crushers, and went six strong innings, allowing just a pair of runs on five hits with three strikeouts.
The Crushers registered eight hits on the evening, but all eight hits were singles. J.C. Figueroa paced the Crushers with a trio of base knocks, and went 3-for-5 on the night, while Erie turned in Lake Erie's only other multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with two base hits and a walk.
The Crushers will continue their three game series with the Florence Freedom at the Home of the Florence Freedom on Tuesday morning. Right hander Trevor Longfellow (6-2, 4.04) will start for the Crushers, and the Freedom will counter with right hander Scott Moviel (0-1, 7.04). The first pitch is scheduled for 11:05 AM.
