Hur Homers, But Streak Is Over

July 22, 2012 - Frontier League (FL)
Rockford RiverHawks News Release

SAUGET, Ill. - Jonathan Johnson extended the longest on-base streak in Frontier League history and extended Gateway's win streak at the expense of Rockford's longest streak in two seasons.

Johnson reached base on two hits and a walk as the Grizzlies beat the RiverHawks, 8-5, on Sunday at GCS Ballpark. Johnson, who doubled in two runs in the third inning to put Gateway in front, has reached base in each of the 57 games he's played this season.

Gateway extended its winning streak to a season-high six games. Rockford had won four in a row, its best since August 2010.

The RiverHawks took a first-inning lead when Ted Obregon led off the game with a single, stole second and third bases and scored on a Javier Herrera groundout.

In the third inning, Johnson lined a ball between Obregon, the shortstop, and center fielder Brandon Anderson to give the Grizzlies a 2-1 lead. Anderson got the ball in shallow left-center, but with no infielder guarding second base, he was forced to concede a shallow double to Johnson. Johnson scored on a two-out single by Rogelio Norris.

Gateway starter Brett Zawacki, a former St. Louis and Miami farmhand in his Frontier League debut, gave up two runs, one earned, on two hits over five innings for the win. Former Butler University pitcher Brad Schnitzer started for Rockford and lost his professional debut. He gave up six runs on six hits and was knocked out by Chris McClendon's one-out, two-run ground-rule double in the fifth inning. Jordan Cudney pitched a perfect ninth inning for his second save.

Alex Guthrie led off the Gateway eighth inning with his first home run of the year. Rockford's Michael Hur hit a three-run homer, his 11th, in the sixth inning.

The series continues at 7:05 p.m. Monday.

The RiverHawks are home for a 6:05 p.m. doubleheader against Normal on Wednesday. Lou Bachrodt Chevrolet sponsors a youth clinic at 5 p.m. It's also Dog Days of Summer, when four-legged fans are welcome in the park.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, an independent professional baseball league in its 20th season. Games are broadcast on WNTA-FM (100.5) Advertising and ticket information is available by calling (815) 885-2255. Fans can also visit www.rockfordriverhawks.com.
