CornBelters Hold off Miners

July 22, 2012 - Frontier League (FL)
Normal CornBelters News Release

The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, jumped out to an early lead and held on in the final frame to defeat the Southern Illinois Miners 3-2 Sunday evening at the Corn Crib. Normal's Tyler Lavigne (4-5) collected his longest outing of the season going 7 and one-third innings, allowing only one run on four hits, four walks, and striking out eight. Daniel Calhoun (3-2) took the loss for Southern Illinois. 'Belter reliever Rich Mascheri came in to get the final five Miners, registering his sixth save of the season.

After three scoreless innings to begin the contest, 'Belter designated hitter Sam Judah broke the tie in the bottom of the 4th with an RBI single, bringing in Bobby Rinard, and putting Normal on top 1-0. The next batter, left fielder KC Judge, followed with an RBI groundout, allowing center fielder Steven Felix to score from third and extend the 'Belter advantage to 2-0.

Despite three CornBelter errors in the early frames, Lavigne held the Miners off the board until the 7th inning when a double by Will Block brought home Ryan Eigsti who walked to lead off the inning, cutting the 'Belter lead to 2-1.

Bobby Rinard's two-out inside the park home run, the first in CornBelter history, added some insurance for Normal in the bottom of the 8th, extending the advantage to 3-1.

Southern Illinois was able to get a run off Mascheri in the 9th, cutting the lead to one but the Miners would get no closer.

The series continues Monday as Jacob Liedka (1-6, 4.23 ERA) will take the mound for the CornBelters against Shawn Gilblair (6-3, 3.46 ERA) of Southern Illinois at 6:30 at the Corn Crib. Pregame begins on WJBC.com at 6:20.
