SAUGET, Ill. - Coming off a series sweep against Schaumburg, Gateway picked up right where they left off with an 8-5 win in their season opener against the Rockford RiverHawks Sunday night at GCS Ballpark. The win was the sixth in a row for Gateway, which is a season-high.

Trailing 1-0 in the third, Gateway (33-25) took the lead for good with a three-run inning, highlighted by a Jonathan Johnson two-run double and a Rogelio Noris RBI single. Johnson has now been on base in all 57 games he has played in, which is a Frontier League record.

Alex Guthrie tacked on another Grizzlies run in the fourth with an RBI single and Chris McClendon drove in two runs with a double in the fifth.

After Rockford (26-31) came within one run on a Michael Hur three-run home run in the sixth, Gateway got another RBI single from Noris and insurance from Guthrie in the eighth on a solo home run. It was his first home run with Gateway and his second professional blast.

Brett Zawacki (1-0) collected the win in his first appearance with the Grizzlies. The right-hander from Peru, IL gave up only one earned in five innings while striking out three batters.

Jordan Cudney pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to get his second save of the season.

Johnson, Noris and Guthrie all had multi-hit games for Gateway.

Gateway and Rockford return to action on Monday night at GCS Ballpark. 6-10 right-hander Max Whieldon (1-0) makes the start for the Grizzlies. First pitch is set for 7:05.
