Lake Erie Crushers News Release

AVON, Ohio -- The Lake Erie Crushers had twice as many hits as the Gateway Grizzlies in their 2013 opener at All Pro Freight Stadium on Friday night, but the Grizzlies used a few timely hits to come away with a 3-2 victory.

Pitching dominated the entire contest, as the two starting pitchers ultimately stole the show, especially in the early stages of the game.

Tim Brown (1-0) tossed eight strong innings, allowing just one run while scattering six hits, and Lake Erie right hander Trevor Longfellow (0-1) hurled seven solid innings, allowing just three runs on four hits with five strikeouts.

The Grizzlies snapped scoreless tie in the top half of the third inning. Antone DeJesus started the inning with a double, and scored on a clutch, two-out single off the bat of Chris McClendon. McClendon then stole second and come home on Jose Flores's base hit.

Lake Erie cut into the lead in the last of the fourth inning. Andrew Davis's first of two extra base hits was a double to start the fourth inning. Davis advanced to third on Russ Moldenhauer's flyout to center, and Davis scored moments later on Daniel Bowman's groundout.

Gateway plated another run in the fifth inning, which ultimately was the difference. DeJesus kick started the offense again, this time with a walk. He then stole second base, advanced to third on Alex Guthrie's groundout, and scored on Jonathan Johnson's groundout.

The Crushers made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth. Davis brought new life to the crowd of 2,938, with a leadoff triple to the gap in left-center field. Moldenhauer brought him home three pitches later on a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to one. Emmanuel Quilles kept the game alive on a two-out double down the left field line, but Gateway reliever Richard Barrett (1) scored the save by retiring Juan Sanchez to seal the deal.

Three Crushers recorded multiple hits in the contest. Guantlett Eldemire led the way for the Crushers at the top of the order, going 3-for-3 with a trio of singles and reached base in all four of his plate appearances. Davis went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple, and Quilles had a pair of hits as well.

The Crushers will continue their three game series with the Grizzlies at All Pro Freight Stadium on Saturday night. The Crushers will start lefty Matt Rein, and the Grizzlies will counter with right hander Ja'Vaun West. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
