Evansville Otters News Release

(EVANSVILLE, INDIANA) "" The Evansville Otters staged a few late inning rallies but the team fell a little short in a 6-4 loss to the Normal CornBelters on Opening Night.

Newcomers played a big role in the game for Evansville as outfielder John Schultz had three hits in the defeat and first baseman Andrew Clark also drove in a pair of runs.

Both teams would score a run in the second inning and Normal increased their lead with a two-run fifth.

Down 3-1, Evansville responded in the bottom of the fifth inning when Clark hit a run-producing single up the middle.

However, after the Otters cut the deficit to one, the CornBelters plated two more unearned runs in the sixth inning.

Trailing 5-2, Evansville would again get the lead down to a single run. Clark hit an RBI single to right field, and a wild throw to third base enabled Shultz to also score on the play.

The Normal CornBelters would add an insurance run on an eighth inning home run and win the first game of the season 6-4.

Both starting pitchers factored into the decision. Normal's right-hander Tyler Lavigne (1-0) receives the win, yielding two runs (one earned) over 6.0 innings. Evansville righty Bryce Morrow (0-1) takes the loss after giving up three runs (one earned) in 5.0 innings pitched. Casey Upperman (first save) pitched a hitless ninth inning to preserve the Normal CornBelters victory.

The teams will meet again on Saturday for the middle game of the series. It is Military Appreciation Night at Historic Bosse Field with a 6:35 pm CDT first pitch. Those who bring a Military ID will receive free admission to the game. The Evansville Otters will also be wearing special camouflage jerseys that night and they will be auctioned off to the highest bidder at the end of the evening. Right-hander Jose Trinidad is the probable pitcher for Normal as lefty Matt Crim will make his season debut for Evansville. You can follow the Otters through Facebook or on Twitter.
