Beach Bums Drop Opener to Slammers

Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
The Traverse City Beach Bums took an early lead, but were unable to withstand a pair of Joliet Slammers rallies as Traverse City fell to Joliet 5-2 on Friday night.
The Beach Bums claimed the game's initial run in the top of the fourth inning. Chase Burch reached on a fielder's choice and stood on second as Zach Kometani stood in and laced a single to right, plating Burch for a 1-0 TC lead. The Slammers wasted no time in responding, however, plating three runs on four hits in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-1 edge.
Traverse City got one of the runs back in the top of the fifth as Marcus Nidiffer led off with a single and two batters later, moved to third on an Andrew Cohn double. Ryan Still stood in next and deposited a single into right to score Nidiffer to chip the Joliet lead back to a run.
Unfortunately, that was as close as the Beach Bums would get as the Slammers scored two runs in the sixth to cap the scoring in the game. TC was able to load the bases on walks in the seventh with two outs, but a pickoff at first base ended the threat.
Evan Anundsen (1-0) picked up the win with six innings of two-run ball, striking out nine. Jacob Sanchez pitched a perfect ninth for the save. Jacob Clem (0-1) took the loss for Traverse City.
The bullpen proved to a bright spot for the Beach Bums as the duo of Chris Squires and Scott Mueller threw 2.2 perfect innings, striking out four along the way.
The series continues tomorrow at 7:05 pm EDT as right-hander Johnny Omahen gets the start for the Beach Bums against lefty Chuck Lofgren for Joliet. Traverse City returns to Northern Michigan for the Home Opener against Evansville on Tuesday at 7:05 pm. It is a Two-for-Tuesday where fans can get two chairback tickets for the price of one on the day of the game.
