SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - Playing in the first extra-inning game of the 2013 Frontier League season, the Schaumburg Boomers celebrated a 3-2 walk-off win over the Washington Wild Things in 11 innings.
Alexi Colon played the hero, singling to deep right with the bases loaded and no one out in the bottom of the 11th to drive home Chad Mozingo with the game winning run. The Boomers fell behind 1-0 early in the game as Washington scored in the first inning. Starter Danny Jimenez, a St. Charles, Ill. native, settled down, working through six innings and striking out seven in his season debut. Washington tied the game in the top of the seventh to force extras. Jose Rodriguez picked up the win in relief.
The Schaumburg pitching staff matched a franchise record set on May 30, 2012 with 13 strikeouts in the game as each of the four pitchers posted at least one strikeout. Mozingo finished 3-for-5 in the contest while Michael Valadez added two hits.
The Boomers (2-0) are back in action on Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. against the Washington Wild Things. RHP Cody Griebling, who won six games as a starter last season, will make his 2013 debut opposite RHP Shawn Sanford.
