Miners defeat Windy City

Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners began the 2013 season off on the right foot as they defeated the Windy City ThunderBolts by a score of 5-2 at Rent One Park. Brian Oliver (1-0) got a win in his first start of the season. He allowed one run and gave up six hits in six innings of work. He struck out two batters and walked one.

The Miners struck first in the bottom of the second inning off ThunderBolts starter Matt Wickswat as catcher Mario Mercedes hit a base hit with two outs to score Jason Ganek. With the Miners leading 1-0, they added another run in the bottom of the third inning as left fielder Gerardo Avila hit a base hit to score Tyler Hall to give the Miners a 2-0 lead.

Windy City scored their first run in the top of the sixth inning off starter Brian Oliver to trim the Miners lead to 2-1. The Miners answered right back and scored two runs to take a 4-1 lead off ThunderBolts starter Matt Wickswat. Cannon Lester hit a sacrifice fly to score Jason Ganek and Phil Butler added a base hit to score Carlos Mendez.

Cody Hall pitched a scoreless seventh inning for Southern Illinois and recorded one strike out. Windy City scored another run off Reese McGraw in the top of the eighth inning to cut the Miners lead to 4-2. Dayne Quist recorded the final out in the eighth inning. The Miners added another run to extend their lead to 5-2 off Andy Mee as Mario Mercedes recorded his third hit of the game to score Cannon Lester after he stole second base.

Brandon Cunniff closed out the game, recording two strikeouts to preserve the 5-2 win for Southern Illinois.

The Miners host the ThunderBolts at 7:05 pm on Saturday at Rent One Park. The Miners will send LHP Richard Sullivan to the mound to face RHP Blayne Weller. Mike Ventola will have the call on the Miners Radio Network beginning at 6:45 with the Heartland Regional Medical Center Pregame Show.
