Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio-The Lake Erie Crushers fall to the Joliet Slammers, 2-0 in the final game of the 2015 as the Crushers couldn't figure out David Kubiak (7-6) who pitched a complete game shutout.
With the loss, the Crushers (38-54) have now lost seven consecutive series and finished the season with a 22-30 record at All Pro Freight Stadium. The Slammers (40-53) finish the season 19-26 on the road and 7-2 against the Crushers.
The Slammers scored the first run of the game in the second inning. Hunter Ridge, Joe Staley and Jeremy Nowak hit three consecutive one out singles. Nowak's single scored Ridge and put the Slammers in the lead. Jack Cleary was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. In a tough spot, Crushers starter, Brad Duffy (8-6) struck out Max Casper and Alfredo Rodriguez to get out of the jam.
In the fourth inning, the Slammers added an insurance run. Jeremy Nowak doubled to the left-center field gap. He reached third on a single off the bat of Cleary. With two outs, a single into left by Rodriguez scored Nowak.
The Crushers had a few opportunities throughout the game. Chandler Brock was stranded at third in the fourth inning. Daniel Aldrich was thrown out at home to end the fifth inning. Trevor Stevens was also stranded at third in the sixth. The Crushers had five hits tonight and 24 hits throughout the series, but only scored six runs against Joliet.
Emmanuel Quiles was the only Crusher to have a multi-hit game, going 2-3. Daniel Aldrich went 1-4 and 3-8 in the series.
Duffy started the game for Lake Erie going 4 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and struck out eight. He took the loss. Five Crushers came out of the bullpen and did not allow another run the rest of the game, keeping the Crushers close until the final out.
Kubiak earned the win by going nine innings giving up only five hits, no runs and struck out seven for the Slammers.
The Crushers will start the final series of the season at GCS Ballpark in Gateway to take on the Grizzlies beginning on Friday. The Crushers will announce their starter tomorrow and the Grizzlies will counter with right hander Tyler Thompson (4-5, 3.16). The first pitch is scheduled for 8:05.
