Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio -- Five Lake Erie Crushers pitchers combined to toss Lake Erie's third shutout victory of the season, as the Crushers took the second game of the series with a 2-0 victory over the Traverse City Beach Bums on Saturday night at All Pro Freight Stadium.
The victory for the Crushers (25-31) marked their third straight series victory in the second half, giving them four series victories in their last five, while the loss for the Beach Bums (33-24) was their fourth in their last five games.
Lake Erie used the combination of Brad Duffy, Daniel DeSimone (2-1), Matt Brankle, Mike Devine and Trevor Longfellow (10) to shutout the Beach Bums, marking their first shutout victory since June 24 against Gateway.
The Beach Bums stranded four base runners in scoring position on the night, and left runners at third twice. Greg Harisis started the third inning with a single, and eventually made his way to third but was left stranded at third after Jose Vargas's groundout. Jeff DeBlieux stroked a two-out triple in the fifth inning, but was later left stranded after Alex Tomasovich was retired on a groundout.
Lake Erie got on the board in the bottom of the third. Austin Prott kept his on base streak alive with a one out double to center, and he scored moments later as Jose Barraza ripped a RBI single right back up the middle to give the Crushers a 1-0 lead.
The fifth inning began with singles from both Emmanuel Quiles and Justin Cureton. With runners on first and second, and one out, Prott delivered a run scoring single back up the middle to bring Quiles home, plating the final run of the game.
Duffy started, and delivered four scoreless innings of work while fanning five batters but didn't factor into the decision. DeSimone took the victory after tossing a scoreless fifth inning. Brankle hit one batter, and struck out the final batter he faced before Devine came in and worked 2.2 scoreless innings of one hit relief with four strikeouts. Longfellow then worked a perfect ninth inning, and scored his second save in as many nights.
Six Crushers hit safely at least once on the night, with Prott and Quiles leading the way with two hits each. Prott went 2-for-5, and extended his on base streak to 24 games. Anderson Hidalgo reached on a bunt single in the sixth inning, extending his hitting streak to 11 games.
The Crushers will finish their three game series with the Traverse City Beach Bums at All Pro Freight Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Right-hander Hunter Adkins (3-4, 2.83) will start for the Crushers and the Beach Bums will counter with left-hander Ian MacDougall (6-4, 2.65). The first pitch is scheduled for 2:05 PM.
