Syracuse Crunch News Release

Rochester, NY (January 9, 2009) - Looking to set a season-high with their third road win in a row, the Syracuse Crunch were denied by the Rochester Americans and dropped a 3-1 decision at Blue Cross Arena tonight in front of 6,310 fans, snapping the club's three-game points streak.

Trying to avenge a 1-0 defeat the last time they met Rochester at Blue Cross Arena back on December 14, the Crunch wanted to set the tone by getting on the board early.

That didn't happen, as Rochester notched the game's first goal just nine seconds into their lone power play in the first frame at the 13:48 mark, when Stefan Meyer picked up the puck in the slot after it hit a body on the way to the net and slid it through Crunch starter Sebastian Dahm to gain the 1-0 lead.

Dahm stopped 11 of 12 shots in the first, while Rochester starter Mike Brodeur turned aside all seven shots he faced.

The Crunch evened up the score late in the second period, with one second left on a 5-on-3 advantage after Rochester had taken a bench minor for too many men on the ice and Karl Stewart was called for hooking at the 13:45 and 14:48 marks, respectively.

Brodeur made a great diving save across the crease with the paddle of his goal stick to rob Mike York about 30 seconds into the 5-on-3, but re-gained control of the puck on the play.

After working the puck around the perimeter, Derek MacKenzie saucered a pass over to Andrey Plekhanov at the right point who rifled a slapper past Brodeur to tie the game at 1-1 at the 15:44 mark of the second stanza.

Rochester re-took the lead just 1:46 into the third period when MacKenzie skated out from behind his own net and got stood up by Tanner Glass.

Glass took the puck away and fed Rory Fitzpatrick in the slot who beat Dahm low to the stick side to give the Americans a 2-1 lead.

Rochester went up by a 3-1 count eight and a half minutes later when Dahm let up a rebound off a shot from Glass and Michael Repik beat Wilson to the rebound and sent a wrister high over the blocker of Dahm and into the back of the net.

Dahm finished with 21 saves, while Brodeur turned away 27 of 28 Syracuse shots.

CRUNCHABLES Tonight was the Crunch's fifth of a season-high six game road trip...Syracuse has now played 24 of its 38 games on the road...Tom Sestito and Mike York both had their two game point streaks snapped tonight...Andrey Plekhanov's goal tonight was his first of the season and first regular season marker since April 6, 2008 @ Rochester.
