Greenville Drive News Release
Hickory, NC - A low-scoring affair went the way of the Hickory Crawdads on Tuesday night, as they plated a run in the bottom of the eighth to defeat the Greenville Drive 2-1 in the series opener.
Hickory's (23-35) rally occurred with two outs in the inning. Consecutive singles by Miguel Aparicio and Yanio Perez put runners on first and second, and Ti'Quan Forbes followed with another hit to plate the go-ahead run off Matthew Gorst (2-2).
The Drive (34-23) received another terrific start from 18-year old Bryan Mata, who allowed just one run over six innings while punching out six Crawdads hitters.
Ryan Scott put Greenville ahead 1-0 in the fourth with an RBI single to score Santiago Espinal, who began the inning with a single and his 10th steal of the season.
Hickory answered right back in the bottom half of the inning courtesy of an RBI single by Forbes.
Reid Anderson (1-2) got the win for the Crawdads with two scoreless innings of relief.
The teams will meet for game two of the three-game series at 10:30 AM in Hickory on Wednesday. Left-hander Robby Sexton (0-5, 4.88) starts on the mound for the Drive, and the Crawdads will counter with right-hander Edgar Arredondo (2-2, 5.21).
