The Columbia Fireflies scored five runs in the eighth inning to overcome a three-run deficit and then held on for a 5-3 win over the Lexington Legends Tuesday night.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth inning, when the Legends took a 1-0 lead. Khalil Lee led off with a single. He reached third when second baseman Luis Carpio committed a throwing error after fielding a ball hit by Angelo Castellano. Lee scored on a single by Kort Peterson.
The Legends added two runs in the seventh inning. With one out, Emmanuel Rivera and Gabriel Cancel singled, and both scored on a double by Meibrys Viloria.
In the bottom of the eighth, Ali Sanchez drew a leadoff walk from Legends reliever Grant Gavin, and after Tim Tebow struck out, Milton Ramos and Gene Cone walked to load the bases. Sanchez scored when Andres Gimenez grounded out to first. Michael Paez followed with a two-run single, tying the game at 3-3. After Matt Wynne replaced Gavin, Dash Winningham singled, sending Paez to third. Desmond Lindsey then singled, scoring both Paez and Winningham.
The Legends had two runners on with no outs in the ninth, but could not score.
Columbia reliever Adam Atkins (1-0), who entered the game at the start of the eighth, got the win. Max Kuhns pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his fourth save.
Gavin (1-2), who relieved starter Ofreidy Gomez at the start of the eighth, took the loss.
Gomez pitched seven shutout innings. He gave up three hits, walked one batter and struck out four. Game two of the three-game series will be played Wednesday afternoon. First pitch is set for 12:05 p.m. Box score
