Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
Charleston, WV - The South Atlantic League has announced the rosters for the 2017 All-Star Game, slated for June 20 at Columbia's Spirit Communications Park. The West Virginia Power, Class A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, has had three players selected, including two starters for the Northern Division squad. Trae Arbet and Ty Moore will start at second base and left field, respectively, and Cam Vieaux was tabbed for the bullpen.
Arbet, a fifth round pick in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft, is batting .282 over 40 games with a team-best six home runs and 31 runs batted in. The 22-year old from Temecula, CA, has started 33 games at second base this season and has put together two hitting streaks of at least six games, including a career-best eight-game streak from April 30 through May 10.
Moore, selected in the 12th round in 2015 Draft out of UCLA, is second on the club with a .285 average over 45 games played. One of the few left-handed bats on the team, Moore has provided consistent offense from that side of the plate, batting .377 in 18 games in the opening month of the season. He also began his season hitting safely in each of his first ten games.
Vieaux is 2-2 this season with a 2.26 earned run average over nine starts with 29 strikeouts and nine walks. The left-handers ERA is seventh-best in the South Atlantic League. The Pirates selected Vieaux out of Michigan State in the 6th round of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft. The left-hander from Novi, MI, had a four-start stretch from April 20 to May 2 in which he went 6.0 innings and allowed one or fewer earned runs in each outing. As of June 6, Vieaux has the longest outing by a Power pitcher this season, tossing seven innings on June 3.
The Northern Division team will be managed by Hagerstown's Patrick Anderson and includes six players from the Suns. Kannapolis and Lakewood each placed five players on the 26-man roster with the BlueClaws' Nick Fanti chosen as the starting pitcher. Delmarva joined the Power with three All-Stars while Hickory and Greensboro each had two players tabbed for mid-season honors.
Columbia manager Jose Leger will manage the Southern Division roster, which includes five players representing the host Fireflies. Like Hagerstown, Asheville had six players selected for the Southern Division roster, including three starters. Charleston and Rome had four All-Stars selected, while Greenville added three players to the roster. Augusta and Lexington each had two players chosen.
Voting was conducted between May 18 and June 1. Each team was given five ballots for the manager, coaches and media relations departments to fill out. During the voting for the mid-season all-stars, all players on all South Atlantic League teams are eligible and clubs may vote for their own players.
