Augusta, GA-The Augusta GreenJackets began their seven game home stand on the right foot Tuesday night by defeating the Rome Braves 11-3 at Lake Olmstead Stadium. It was the most amount of runs the GreenJackets had scored in a single game all season.
The stars of the game were Skyler Ewing, Kelvin Beltre, and Brandon Van Horn. Ewing and Beltre each collected multiple hits and scored three runs each and Van Horn hit a three run inside the park home run.
The GreenJackets led 2-1 going into the bottom of the sixth. Beltre led off the inning with a single and Ewing was hit by pitch. Jose Vizcaino advanced them to second and third on a bunt but reached first on a throwing error by Lucas Herbert, scoring Beltre and making it 3-1. With two outs, the bases loaded, and Van Horn up, Ewing scored on a wild pitch making it 4-1. Van Horn followed with his inside the park home run to blow the game open.
Starter Stephen Woods turned in a solid start for the GreenJackets. He went six innings and gave up only one run off of five hits and struck out eight. Caleb Smith struck out two in relief in the seventh. Wilson Santos added a scoreless inning in the eighth and Jeff Burke closed it out in the ninth.
The GreenJackets added an additional three runs in the bottom of the seventh to reach double digits for only the second time this season. Another run was added in the eighth to make it 11-1. The Braves scored two in the top of the ninth against Burke but that was all.
The GreenJackets will be back in action Wednesday night for game two of the three game series with the Braves. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm with the gates opening at 6pm. It is Walk Off Wednesday, Watering Hole Wednesday, Baseball Bingo presented by Comfort Keepers, and Silver Jackets Wednesday presented by AARP, Brandon Wilde, Comfort Keepers, and Fleet Feet Sports.
Melvin Adon (0-5, 3.79) will start on the mound for the GreenJackets against Jeremy Walker (2-4, 5.23) for the Braves.
