Hickory Crawdads News Release
KANNAPOLIS, NC - The Hickory Crawdads cruised to the 7-1 win against the Kannapolis Intimidators, before 1,706 fans at CMC-Northeast Stadium in Kannapolis on Tuesday night . With the win, the 'Dads increased their lead for first place in the early Northern Division Second-Half Standing, moving 1.5 games ahead of Kannapolis.
After Hickory RHP Nick Martinez (W, 4-2) and Kannapolis LHP Scott Snodgress (L, 2-3) alternated the first four frames in scoreless fashion, the Crawdads (5-1, 41-34) broke through with the game's first run in the top of the fifth. With two away and the 'Dads also searching for their first hit of the day, C Kellin Deglan hammered a solo home run inside the right-field foul pole, lifting Hickory ahead, 1-0.
Martinez kept the Intimidators (3-2, 36-39) off the board through his six innings, collecting seven strikeouts in the start. RHP Nick McBride followed Martinez with a scoreless bottom of the seventh, keeping Hickory in the narrow lead.
The 'Dads then exploded for six runs in the top of the eighth inning. The frame started with DH Jorge Alfaro being hit by a pitch, and then racing to third base on a double by Deglan. One out later, SS Nick Urbanus drove in both runners with a two-run single up the middle. Urbanus then flew home from first base on an RBI double by RF Chris Grayson, who darted in from second on an RBI double by 1B Trever Adams, making it 5-0. Later in the frame, RBI singles by LF Jeremy Williams and Alfaro capped the rally and extended the lead to 7-0.
Kannapolis managed to avoid the shutout with an RBI single by DH Leighton Pangilinan in the bottom of the eighth against RHP Daniel Lopez. Lopez, however, got out of the eighth and then struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth, closing the 7-1 win for the Crawdads.
