Augusta GreenJackets News Release

Augusta, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets offense - a unit that has provided ten or more hits in three of Augusta's first five games in the second half - was shut down on Tuesday night by the Asheville Tourists. The GreenJackets managed just four hits in an 8-1 loss to the Tourists at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

The GreenJackets have won all four of the games where they've claimed the first lead in the second half and have now dropped both games where the opponent scored first. That trend continued in this one as Augusta starter Paul Davis retired the first six hitters he faced before running into trouble in the third. The Tourists batted around in the inning to score four times and take a 4-0 lead.

An infield single and an error put runners at first and second and with one out, a second single in the inning loaded the bases. Trevor Story delivered an RBI single to put the Tourists up 1-0. After Taylor Featherston struck out, Davis went up 1-2 in the count to Will Swanner with two outs and the chance to get out of the inning with just one run scored against him. Swanner drilled the 1-2 offering for a two-run single though, giving the Tourists a 3-0 lead. Jordan Ribera followed with another two-out hit to push Asheville's lead to 4-0. Five of Asheville's eight runs would score with two outs in the respective inning.

The Tourists got another run in the fourth on back-to-back doubles to go up 5-0 before the GreenJackets got on the board. With one out in the fourth, Shawn Payne's third homer of the season - a solo shot - cut Asheville's lead to 5-1. Asheville would tack on a run in the sixth though on a Brian Humphries RBI double and two more in the seventh on a two-run double from Jose Rivera to build their seven-run advantage.

Davis (3-3) held on to throw six innings, allowing six runs - two earned - on ten hits while striking out six. The six strikeouts equaled a season-best.

By the later innings, Asheville starter Ben Alsup became the story as he took the mound for the ninth inning in an attempt to become the second Tourist to throw a complete game against the GreenJackets this season. His complete game bid ended quickly as he left with one out in the ninth, allowing a run on two hits and a walk while striking out seven.

With the series even at a game apiece, the GreenJackets send Clayton Blackburn (4-2, 3.17) to the mound on Wednesday to face Vianney Mayo (2-3, 4.82) in the third game of the set. First pitch comes at 7:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1340 AM and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.

Single-game tickets for any GreenJackets home game are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
