Crawdads Blow Past RiverDogs, 9-2

CHARLESTON, SC -Ed Koncel and Cristian Santana contributed run-scoring doubles, as the Hickory Crawdads defeated the Charleston RiverDogs, 9-2, in South Atlantic League action Friday night in front of a crowd of 4,732 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

Charleston falls to 10-13 as it drops its third straight game, while Hickory climbs to 13-10 winning its fifth in a row.

Hickory took a 1-0 in the first, when Leury Garcia darted home on a wild pitch by Charleston starter Sean Black.

The RiverDogs knotted the game at 1-1 in the bottom half on a two-out RBI single by Rob Lyerly against Hickory starter Wilmer Font.

Koncel delivered a two-RBI double in the fourth against Black (1-2), which was followed by Mike Ortiz's RBI single for a 4-1 advantage.

Two more runs scored in the fifth for the Crawdads aided by two Charleston errors and another wild pitch for a 6-1 score.

A rally attempt in the bottom of the fifth lasted just one run long on Jimmy Paredes' RBI groundout cutting the deficit to 6-2.

Santana slugged his RBI double in the seventh against Charleston reliever Mike Solbach for a 7-2 count, while Joe Bonadonna knocked a RBI single to centerfield in the eighth, and Garcia contributed a RBI groundout accounting for the 9-2 final.

Font (3-0) earned the win for Hickory allowing two runs on six hits over five innings to pickup his third career victory over the RiverDogs dating back to 2009. Black absorbed his third loss - and second to Hickory - permitting six runs on five hits in 4.1 innings of work.

Zoilo Almonte had a 3-for-5 performance with a run scored, while Lyerly and Kelvin Castro added two hits a piece for the RiverDogs.

The four-game series concludes Saturday at 7:05 p.m., as Charleston sends right-hander Jose Ramirez (1-0, 1.93) to the mound to face fellow righty Matt Thompson (1-1, 5.91) for Hickory.
