Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
Savannah, GA - The Savannah Sand Gnats (15-8) put together a full team effort to beat the Lexington Legends 7-2 Friday night in front of 2,389 fans at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Gnats have won three straight over Lexington (11-12) and still hold the best record in the South Atlantic League.
The fourth inning was the decisive frame in the game. With the score tied 1-1, the Gnats loaded the bases with no one out against Legends starter Robbie Donovan. Donovan then threw ball one to Jefry Marte and, after barking at home plate umpire Jonathan Bailey, was promptly ejected from the game. Marte greeted the Legends reliever, Wander Alvino, with a two-run double off the left field wall that put the Gnats ahead 3-1. Marte missed a grand slam by fewer than six feet. The Gnats added two more runs in the inning after Marte's double. Cesar Puello singled through the left side to drive in a run, and the final run scored on an error. Marte has now hit safely in five straight games over which time he is 6-for-18 (.333) with two doubles.
Savannah used power to tack on single runs in the sixth and eighth innings. Kai Gronauer drilled his first home run of the year in the sixth on a rocket to left field. In the eighth, LF Juan Lagares tripled into the right field corner and scored on a groundball from SS Wilmer Flores, who was held hitless tonight. Lagares was 2-4 and scored twice.
Mark Cohoon threw six and a third innings for the Gnats, holding Lexington to two runs on six hits to earn his fourth straight win.
The Gnats, who have won the first three games of the series, send RHP Brandon Moore (0-1, 2.87) to the mound Saturday night against RHP Juan Minaya (0-3, 6.75) for Lexington. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05. Fireworks presented by KIX 96 follow the game with pregame music presented by Live Wire Music Hall beginning when the gates open at 4:30.
Saturday, the Gnats will hold Home Town Heroes Day in conjunction with the Savannah Chatham Metropolitan Police Department from 12-4 at Historic Grayson Stadium. The free event will honor our law enforcement, military and first responders and entertain and educate fans about the work they do and how they do it. Home Town Heroes Day will feature free food and kids entertainment with helicopter landings, bomb squad demonstrations and service vehicles of all types. Every fan who attends Home Town Heroes Day will receive a free ticket to Saturday night's game against Lexington. For more information, please visit sandgnats.com.
