Hagerstown Suns News Release

Hagerstown, MD -- The Hagerstown Police Department, Washington County Narcotics Task Force, Washington County Sheriff's Office and the Hagerstown Suns will team up to offer substance abuse prevention to the Washington County communities.

This community education campaign will launch during the 2010 season of the Hagerstown Suns and will bring family-friendly activities to the ballpark including on field presentations, free tickets and meals for Washington County children, and questionnaires on special nights to help parents and children start conversations regarding drug abuse.

Arthur Smith, Chief of the Hagerstown Police Department, says "studies have consistently shown that monies invested in drug prevention programs for our young people have a return significantly greater than monies spent on enforcement efforts and many times greater than monies spent on incarceration."

"Being a parent myself I know family entertainment and activity can be driving forces in education and delivering messages to your children," said Suns President Bob Flannery. "The organizations involved have already done outstanding work, and we're thrilled to be a part of this new and innovative program."

"The best thing parents can do is talk to their children about the affects of illegal drugs," says Sheriff Doug Mullendore. "The Drug Free Washington County partnership with the Hagerstown Suns will foster this dialogue by touching parents and children in a fun and healthy atmosphere."
