Spokane Chiefs News Release
Spokane, Wash. - Rookie netminder Dawson Cowan posted a career-high 54 saves in his first start as a Chief Saturday night, though Spokane fell to the Calgary Hitmen 6-2.
For just the fifth time this season, the Chiefs opened the scoring as rookie forward Cam Parr connected with Carter Streek right in front of the net at 5:09. The assist marked Parr's first WHL career point.
But Calgary would answer with back-to-back goals to close out the period, first from Riley Fiddler-Schultz at 14:33, then from Grayden Siepmann at 19:08 to give the Hitmen a 2-1 advantage heading into the first break.
Jacob Wright padded that lead to 3-1 about six minutes into the second period with his fourth goal of the season.
Jake Gudelj answered a minute later as he fired a shot from his knees at the left circle into the back of the net to put the Chiefs within one.
That's as close as Spokane would get, though, as the Hitmen pulled away with two more goals in the second period (Matteo Danis and Zac Funk) and a final one in the third (Carson Wetsch) to bring the final score to 6-2.
Dawson Cowan got the start for Spokane and turned aside a career-high 54 saves throughout his 60 minutes in net.
Spokane went 0-for-1 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
