Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (13-25) nearly spoiled an early lead against the Omaha Storm Chasers (14-26), but an 11th-inning walk-off single from Ryan Court gave Iowa the 4-3 victory, Thursday at Principal Park.
Iowa first threatened in the third. With two outs, Mike Freeman doubled, Chesny Young singled and Efren Navarro drew a walk to load the bags. Mark Zagunis had the chance to put Iowa on the board. He roped a ball to the right side, but a leaping grab by first baseman Ryan O'Hearn ended the inning.
Bijan Rademacher sparked Iowa's scoring drive with a leadoff walk in the fourth. Jacob Hannemann followed with a single and back-to-back doubles from Chris Gimenez and Stephen Bruno led to a 3-0 advantage for Iowa.
The I-Cubs held on to the edge until the eighth. Paulo Orlando spoiled the shutout with a solo home run to start the inning and the Storm Chasers went on to collect three runs on five hits to knot the game at 3-3.
The tie held until the 11th. With Zagunis beginning the inning at second, Rademacher put down a perfect bunt to move the runner to third. After striking out in three of four at-bats through the game, Court made up for it with an RBI single on the first pitch of the at-bat to push Iowa to the win.
Luke Farrell had a bounce-back outing, holding Omaha to one hit over five hitless innings. Cory Mazzoni (1-2) secured the win, getting Iowa through the final two frames of the game.
Iowa and Omaha play the second game of the four-game set tomorrow at 7:08 p.m. on Firework Friday. For more information or tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
