Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES, IA - Ryan Court completed Iowa's first cycle in nearly 21 years as the I-Cubs (36-62) secured a 10-8, comeback victory over the New Orleans Baby Cakes (46-53) Friday at Principal Park.
Court locked down the cycle with an eighth-inning triple, marking the first Iowa cycle since Robin Jennings on Aug. 15, 1997. He finished the game 4-for-5 with four runs and two RBI, while extending his hitting streak to 15 games.
The Baby Cakes opened the scoring on a Tomas Telis RBI single in the first and built a 4-1 lead after three off Jen-Ho Tseng.
The I-Cubs stole a run back on a Taylor Davis double to make it 4-2 in the fourth, but the Baby Cakes pushed the edge in the seventh. After a scoreless fifth and sixth inning, Peter Mooney sent a ball into orbit and hit a grand slam off Iowa Cubs reliever Rob Zastryzny to make the game 8-2.
The I-Cubs were able to respond with back-to-back home runs from David Bote and Court to make the game 8-5 in the bottom of the inning. It was the second time the I-Cubs have gone back-to-back this season with the first coming on June 16 at Tacoma when Bote and Victor Caratini accomplished this feat.
In the top of the eighth inning, Will Remillard and Mark Zagunis were brought in from a Chris Coghlan triple to make the game 8-7. Bote then stepped in to squeak a single in between the hole at short and third to tie the game at 8-8. Court followed Bote with a triple to give the I-Cubs a 9-8 lead. The I-Cubs were able to tack on an insurance run on a sac fly from Davis to make it a five-run inning.
Cory Mazzoni got into some trouble in the ninth with two hits, but was able to get away unscathed to grab his third save of the season and lock down the win for Iowa.
The I-Cubs will be back in action tomorrow night against the New Orleans Baby Cakes with the first pitch at 7:08. Fans can enjoy Pre-Game Catch on the Field starting before the game.
