Kane County Cougars News Release
Geneva, IL - Raul Padron delivered a two-out, two-run triple, and Joe Newby, Randy Rapp and Brad Kilby provided five innings of two-hit scoreless relief, as the Kane County Cougars defeated the West Michigan Whitecaps, 3-1, Monday night in front of 6,074 fans at Elfstrom Stadium. The showdown featured a pair of playoff-bound teams that own the top two collective records in the Midwest League.
The Whitecaps scored their only run of the game in the fourth against Cougars starter Joe Piekarz, who allowed the tally on four hits, walked three and fanned four in four innings. He gave way to Newby (4-0), who recorded the win when the Cougars' offense broke through in the fifth and sixth against Whitecaps lefty Erik Averill.
Justin Sellers scored Kane County Cougars' first run when he stole third base and scampered home on an error by catcher Dusty Ryan. Then in the sixth Jeff Baisley walked, Jose Pineda singled and Steve Kleen bounced into a fielder's choice to put runners at first and third with one out. Padron, who belted a grand slam and drove in six runs Sunday in Clinton, smashed a triple over outfielder Jeramy Laster that scored Baisley and Kleen for a 3-1 game.
Rapp struck out five of the seven men he faced in relief of Newby, and Kilby took over in the ninth to record the final two outs for his seventh save in eight chances. Averill (8-6) took the loss.
The Cougars (30-21), who won their 70th game overall, face the Whitecaps (36-15) again Tuesday night at 6:30 CT, as Trey Shields (10-8, 4.84) squares off against Matt Rusch (8-3, 1.93).
