Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING - The Lansing Lugnuts opened their four game set with the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays by using four pitchers to shutout the Rays 2-0 before 2,872 fans at Oldsmobile Park Monday night. Lansing's last two victories have come in shutout fashion.
Hector Delgadillo (1-0) made his first start for the Lugnuts, throwing five innings and allowing just three hits while fanning three batters. He was followed by relievers Ted Serro, Jordan Timm, and Paul Phillips, who cumulatively threw the final four innings. Phillips got his 12th save of the season in his appearance.
Lansing took the early lead by taking advantage of three Southwest Michigan errors in the first inning. Jason Armstrong reached on an error and was moved to second on a Luke Hetherington single. The two runners moved up a bag after an error by the Rays Alex Jamieson at first base. Joey Metropoulos then reached on an error by Matt Devins to load the bases for Brian Pettway, who laced a single into center field that plated Armstrong and made the score 1-0.
It would be the only run of the frame for Lansing and the only one that Greg Reinhard (5-9) allowed for the Rays. He took the tough luck loss, allowing the unearned run in five innings of work while striking out eight batters.
The Lugnuts put their only other run of the game on the board in the sixth when Brian Bormaster connected for his fifth homer of the year, a solo shot to left that extended the lead to 2-0.
The win snaps a three game slide for Lansing (61-57, 21-30). The Lugnuts will host Southwest Michigan (54-66, 22-29) for game two of the series on Tuesday afternoon. Casey McKenzie (1-4, 3.61) will take the hill for the Lugnuts while Matt Walker (4-4, 2.95) will hurl for the Rays. First pitch is set for 12:05 p.m.
