West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

GENEVA, IL - The Whitecaps stranded two runners in scoring position in the ninth inning of a 3-1 loss to Kane County.

Justin Justice followed a pinch hit single by Pedro Cotto with a double down the left field line to put men at second and third with two out. But Cougars closer Brad Kilby struck out Jeramy Laster to end the game.

Justice drove in Rafael Mendez with the Whitecaps only run of the night on a single in the fourth inning, which put the ‘Caps on top, 1-0.

Justin Sellers played a key role in the win for Kane County. The shortstop made a running catch of a line drive that looked to be headed to center field off the bat of Mark Haske in the ninth inning.

In the fifth inning, Sellers stole third and scored when the throw to third by catcher Dusty Ryan was low and went down the left field line.

The Cougars took the lead on a two-run, two out triple by Raul Padron in the sixth inning.

Erik Averill pitched seven innings but took the loss for West Michigan. He allowed all three cougars runs (2 ER) on five hits and four walks.

Joe Newby picked up the win with two shutout innings of relief for Kane County.
