Burlington, IA (August 14, 2006) South Bend starter Adam Howard scattered seven hits over eight innings to lead the Silver Hawks (32-18, 65-51) to a 7-1 win over the Burlington Bees (21-30, 56-62) tonight at Community Field to open a four-game series. South Bend leads the season series 3-1.
Howard (8-3) didn't allow more than one hit an inning until the seventh when the Bees got their only run. Miguel Vega lined a double to right-center field and scored on a single by Brady Everett. Eight of the nine starters for the Bees had a hit tonight, but only Vega had two. He added a single in the ninth against Ramon Sanchez who finished out the game for South Bend. Howard didn't walk a batter and struck out three.
Bees starter Dan Cortes (1-1) allowed seven runs (six earned) on seven hits in 4.2 innings for his first loss in a Bees uniform. The Silver Hawks got an unearned run in the second. Ricardo Sosa drew a leadoff walk and went to third when Cortes' pick-off attempt sailed high down the right field line. Sosa scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly by Will Crouch. South Bend added a run in the fourth when Brian Byrne scored on a wild pitch and broke the game open with five runs in the fifth to knock Cortes out of the game. Greg Thomson led off with a single, stole second, went to third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a double by Leyson Septimo. After a wild pitch moved Septimo to third, Justin Upton hit a laser down the left field line for another double that extended the lead to 4-0. After a groundout, Sosa singled to drive in Upton and then Orlando Mercado capped the rally with a two-run homer to left.
David Henninger took over for Cortes in the fifth and got Crouch to fly out to end the inning. Henninger went on to work 3.1 scoreless innings in relief, allowing just one hit and striking out two. Kraig Schambough finished off the game with a 1-2-3 ninth and struck out one.
The Bees and Silver Hawks continue this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Community Field. RH Carlos Rosa (7-6, 2.65) will start for the Bees against RH Kyle Wright (7-3, 3.44) for South Bend. The gates open at 6:00 for a Hawk Eye 2-for-Tuesday. Fans can bring the coupon from tomorrow's newspaper and get two general admission tickets for the price of one. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
