GENEVA, Ill. - After not winning eight straight series, the Kane County Cougars (22-23) put themselves in a good spot to win their fourth straight set with a 3-0 victory over the Houston Apollos (7-36) Tuesday night.
Josh Tols (2-3) set the tone with seven shutout innings only allowing one hit and striking out a season-high eight batters.
The Cougars took a 2-0 lead in the 3rd inning and never looked back. Anthony Ray drove in the first run with an RBI double to plate Josh Rolette. Two batters later, Gavin LaValley doubled the lead with another RBI single. In the 5th, Mark Karaviotis tacked on one more insurance run with a run-scoring double.
After Tols fourth quality start of the year, Christian DeLeon and Kyle Huckaby teamed up for a scoreless 8th inning while stranding two runners on. Mark Seyler took the mound in the 9th and stranded two more runners for his team-leading eighth save of the year. Huckaby and DeLeon each earned a hold.
