Cougars Suffer First Sweep of \'09
July 24, 2009 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - The Kane County Cougars ended one of the longest scoring droughts in franchise history Friday night but suffered a fourth consecutive loss. The 4-2 defeat at the hands of the Fort Wayne TinCaps in front of 7,205 at Elfstrom Stadium gave the Cougars a season-high losing streak and handed them their first series sweep of the year.
Mathieu Leblanc-Poirier (2-4) gave up three runs -- two earned -- on two hits over five innings but walked five and took the loss. Josue Selenis pitched three solid relief innings and gave up an unearned run, and Justin Murray worked a perfect relief inning.
The Cougars never led in the game. They trailed, 3-0, in the bottom of the fifth when Franklin Hernandez was hit by a pitch and later scored following a single by Dusty Napoleon and a Fort Wayne. That run was the first by the Cougars' offense in 34 2/3 innings. Steve Parker's RBI double in the eighth accounted for the final run of the game. Stiven Osuna (8-6) recorded the win for the TinCaps (23-4, 68-29), and Brad Brach notched his league-best 26th save.
The teams battled through steady rain in the later innings, and the Cougars had to cancel their post-game fireworks show. Ticket stubs from Friday's game can be used for any of the following five fireworks nights: August 11, August 12, August 13, September 5 and September 6.
The Cougars (13-14, 54-43) continue their six-game homestand Saturday night at 6 CDT when they start a three-game series with the Dayton Dragons. Shawn Haviland (6-6, 4.21) will face Daniel Fairel (7-5, 3.04).
