Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

Before the rains began pounding down on Modern Woodmen Park Friday night, the Quad Cities River Bandits reigned down on the West Michigan Whitecaps for an 8-4 win in a rain-shortened ballgame that ended after seven innings of play.

Quad Cities (11-15, 41-55) played in front of a crowd of 5,311 and snapped a five-game losing streak with the victory, ending a stretch in which the club mustered just three runs over 43 innings. Despite the loss, West Michigan (17-10, 60-37) finishes the season series with five wins in six games against the River Bandits.

Quad Cities came out swinging on Friday night, scoring more runs in the first inning than they had in the previous five games combined. Jose Garcia and Alex Castellanos collected back-to-back singles to open the frame, but they would be the only two hits recorded in the inning. Three walks, two errors, and a pair of sacrifice flies later, the River Bandits emerged with a quick 4-0 lead.

The Whitecaps got on the board in the top of the second but the River Bandits quickly answered. Garcia led off the bottom of the second with a double inside the bag at third. Two pitches later he came around to score as Castellanos rolled a single into left for a 5-1 advantage.

West Michigan chipped away with single runs in the fourth and fifth to pull within 5-3, but Quad Cities rallied to separate themselves in the bottom of the fifth. Osvaldo Morales and Matt Carpenter each singled to lead off the inning and Travis Mitchell reached on a bunt to load the bases with nobody out. Jason Stidham drew a walk to force in a run, and after a pitching change a pair of run-scoring groundouts pushed the River Bandits' lead to 8-3.

The score was 8-4 after the seventh inning when a rain that began in the top of the sixth turned into a torrential downpour. With heavy storms and potential tornadoes in the forecast, the game was officially called after a 45-minute delay. Since the contest went seven full innings, the River Bandits secured the rain-shortened victory.

Kevin Thomas (4-6) earned the win with six solid innings, allowing four runs - three earned - on five hits while fanning three and issuing no walks. Luke Putkonen (6-7) suffered the loss for West Michigan after recording just one out and allowing four runs - two earned - on two hits and three walks.

UP NEXT: The homestand continues into the weekend with a Rockin' Saturday as the River Bandits and Pepsi give away free hats to the first 2,000 fans and Minus Six takes the stage for a live post-game concert. Rascal will celebrate his birthday with Mascot Mania on a U.S. Bank Family Sunday in which fans arriving early will receive a 2009 Team Photo from Heartland Chiropractic and kids that stay late will enjoy a marshmallow rainstorm during the FIRST EVER MEGA-CANDY DROP!!! Eventually, the homestand will conclude with a special 1:00 p.m. start time for Super Splash Day on Monday.
