Kane County Cougars News Release
Dayton, OH - Down 4-1 against the Dayton Dragons entering the eighth inning on Friday night in Ohio, the Kane County Cougars roared back, winning 5-4 for their fifth consecutive victory and ninth in the last 11th games. Raul Padron's two-run single in the top of the ninth proved to be the game-winner.
The Cougars took advantage of two Dayton errors in the eighth. Anthony Recker reached on a dropped popup, and Nick Blasi tripled him home. Then Justin Sellers was at first base after a walk when Dayton's Russell Haltiwanger threw a wild pickoff toss to first, allowing Blasi to score and cut it to 4-3.
Steve Kleen and Jose Pineda singled off Dragons closer Zac Stott to start the ninth-inning rally, and Jeff Bieker bunted them both to scoring position, setting up Padron's two-run hit to right field for the 5-4 lead.
Dan Fyvie pitched a perfect ninth for his second save and made a winner out of Brad Kilby (1-0), who tossed two flawless relief frames to get the win. Stott (0-2) suffered the loss.
The Cougars fell behind 3-0 in the first inning, as the Dragons delivered five hits against starter Jason Ray. Jeff Baisley put Kane County on the scoreboard with a lead-off home run in the second, his fourth round-tripper of the season and 15th RBI. That 3-1 score changed when Ray allowed his final run in the fourth for a 4-1 count. Brad Davis entered that inning and got out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam to keep the Cougars close and set up the heroics later in the game.
The Cougars (11-4) and Dayton (5-10) play game two of the series on Saturday night at 6 CDT. Trey Shields (2-1, 4.50) will face the Dragons' Travis Wood (1-0, 3.55).
