Whitecaps Blank LumberKings
April 21, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Clinton LumberKings News Release
Comstock Park, MI -- The Clinton LumberKings again got a great performance out of a starting pitcher and could not turn it into a victory. Starter Omar Poveda worked six innings of six hit baseball, allowing just two earned runs. Those runs would be enough, though, and the West Michigan Whitecaps would score another run of insurance to claim a 3-0 victory.
Poveda (0-1) took the loss, striking out seven batters in the process. His counterpart was equally good. Whitecaps right-hander Sendy Vasquez (2-0) also pitched six innings, allowing five hits and no earned runs. In fact, Vasquez has yet to allow a single earned run through three starts. Also highlighting his stats for the night were eight strikeouts.
Leftfielder Justin Justice plated a run in the fourth and sixth innings for the Whitecaps and was 2-for-3 on the night. He singled home Matt Joyce for the first run of the game, and drove home Mark Haske with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.
The Whitecaps manufactured an insurance run in the eighth, turning a leadoff single by Cameron Maybin into a run off the bat of Ryan Roberson after a stolen base and a fielder's choice.
In the ninth, the LumberKings were shut down by Midwest League saves leader Orlando Perdomo. He retired the L-Kings in order to pick up his 6th save of the year.
With the win, West Michigan improves to 8-6, while Clinton falls to 5-10. The two teams will clash tomorrow at 1:00pm central time in the second game of a four game series. Lefthander Michael Kirkman will take the mound for the LumberKings against Whitecaps righty Burke Badenhop.
