April 21, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Burlington Bees News Release
Peoria, IL- Three pitchers for the Peoria Chiefs (6-9) combined to limit the Burlington Bees (7-8) to four hits in a 2-0 shutout win at O'Brien Field tonight to open a four-game series. The Bees have been shutout in the last two games and four times for the year. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Chiefs and gave the Bees consecutive losses for just the second time this year.
Chiefs' starter Mitch Atkins (1-0) pitched the first five innings and struck out five for the win. He hasn't allowed a run in his last 14 innings of work. The Bees threatened in the third when Miguel Vega led off with a double to right-center, but Atkins got a strikeout and a comebacker right after that and got out of the inning. Tim Layden and Ed Campusano pitched two innings apiece to finish the game with Campusano earning his third save of the season. The Bees had a man in scoring position with one out and loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh, but Layden struck out Chris McConnell to get out of the jam. He finished with five strikeouts while walking three.
Chris Nicoll (0-1) looked sharp in his Bees debut. He pitched 4.2 innings and allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out eight. Eight strikeouts is the most in a game by a Bees pitcher this season. The Chiefs scored their run against him in the third. Robinson Chirinos drew a one-out walk, stole second, and scored on a triple by Matt Ciaramella. Gilbert De La Vara followed Nicoll to the mound and allowed a run on three hits and struck out three in 2.1 innings. He hit Alberto Garcia in the foot with a curve ball to start the seventh and Chirinos drove him in with a single three batters later. Chris Hayes finished on the mound for the Bees and pitched a scoreless inning.
The Bees and Chiefs continue this series tomorrow night at 6:30 at O'Brien Field. RH Matt Kniginyzky (2-0, 3.18) will start for the Bees against LH Donnie Veal (1-2, 4.20) for the Chiefs. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:10.
