West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK - When Sendy Vasquez has taken the mound for the Whitecaps this season, West Michigan is 3-0. Perhaps more impressive is that all three of those wins have been shutout victories, including a 3-0 triumph over Clinton on Friday night.

Vasquez tossed six innings with five hits and two walks allowed, along with eight strikeouts. He earned the victory and improves to 2-0.

Three relievers threw an inning apiece to complete the shutout: Gibbs Wilson, Rickey Steik and Orlando Perdomo. With a perfect ninth inning of work, Perdomo earned his sixth save in six opportunities on the season.

Whitecaps pitchers combined for a season-high 12 strikeouts.

Justin Justice led the offensive attack as he went 2-3 with a pair of RBI, including the first two runs batted in of the game. Justice singled in the fourth to drive in Matt Joyce and put the Whitecaps on the board.

In the sixth, Justice delivered a sacrifice fly to drive in Mark Haske.

The most serious threat mounted by the LumberKings came in the fifth inning with the Whitecaps holding a 1-0 lead. Matt Smith reached base on a one-out single. On a hit and run play the next batter, Terry Blunt hit a fly ball to center that caught by Cameron Maybin. Smith rounded second but then cut straight to first in a retreat to the bag. The Whitecaps appealed to second base and recorded an inning ending double play.

West Michigan has notched four shutouts in the first 14 games of the season.
