Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Illinois - In the opener of a day-night doubleheader at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark, Gioskar Amaya delivered a three-RBI double in the top of the 6th inning in support of the Kane County Cougars 5-0 shutout of the Peoria Chiefs on Thursday afternoon.
Three Cougars (19-18) pitchers combined to allow just one hit over seven innings of work against the Chiefs (18-19). Brian Smith, in his first start of the season, did not allow a hit over four innings and walked just two.
Eddie Orozco (2-2) surrendered a hit to Jordan Walton to leadoff the fifth inning that broke up the no-hit bid. Orozco would induce a double-play grounder immediately following the base hit as part of his two shutout innings in which he faced the minimum six hitters. Jeff Antigua worked a perfect seventh inning to complete the Cougars second straight shutout of the Chiefs.
Kurt Heyer (2-2) worked around a lot of trouble in 5.1 innings of work. He stranded multiple base runners in the first, fourth and fifth innings. Pin-Chieh Chen gave the Cougars the lead in the second when he drove home Marco Hernandez with a two-out RBI single.
The Cougars added to their lead in the sixth inning. With runners at second and third, Heyer intentionally walked Pin-Chieh Chen to load the bases with one out for Amaya. The Cougars' second baseman made the Chiefs pay when he lashed a three-RBI double into left field to give the Cougars a 4-0 lead. Dan Vogelbach added an RBI double off of Chiefs reliever Michael Aldrete in the sixth.
The Cougars will play the nightcap of Thursday's split doubleheader at 6:30 p.m. with a chance to take the four-game series against the Chiefs. Lefty Michael Heesch (2-2) will be on the mound for the Cougars squaring off against righty Silfredo Garcia (0-0). The Cougars will head on the road for a seven-game road trip after Thursday's nightcap. The Cougars' next homestand will begin on May 25th at 6:30 p.m. against the Beloit Snappers.
