Dragons Comeback Bid Falls Short, 6-4

Dayton, Ohio-The West Michigan Whitecaps scored five runs in the second inning and raced out to a 6-0 lead before holding off the Dayton Dragons 6-4 on Thursday night in the rubber match of a three-game series at Fifth Third Field.

The Dragons fell to 13-26 on the season while West Michigan improved to 17-20. The Dragons went 3-6 on their nine-game home stand.

The Whitecaps took advantage of four walks in the second inning but Dayton starting pitcher Pedro Diaz to score five times, capped off by a two-run double by Devin Travis. Lance Durham's solo home run in the third made it 6-0.

The Dragons started back in the sixth inning when Jesse Winker belted a home run just the left of the 402' sign in center field with two men on base to make it 6-3. It was Winker's fifth home run of the season.

In the eighth, the Dragons got the tying run to the plate with no one out after back-to-back singles by Winker and Seth Mejias-Brean. Winker eventually scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-4, but Mejias-Brean was stranded at third, and the Dragons were retired in order in the ninth to close out the night.

The Dragons outhit the Whitecaps 8-6. Winker and Mejias-Brean each had two hits. Winker raised his batting average to an even .300 on the year.

Diaz (0-4) suffered the loss. He lasted just two and one-third innings, allowing five hits and six runs with four walks and four strikeouts.

The Dragons bullpen turned in its best performance of the season. Tony Amezcua worked four and two-thirds innings in relief of Diaz, retiring 14 of the 15 batters he faced and striking out two. The only base runner against Amezcua came on a bunt single. Alejandro Chacin tossed two perfect innings, striking out four. West Michigan had just one man on base after the third inning.

The Dragons travel to South Bend, Indiana to begin a five-game series on Friday against the South Bend Silver Hawks at 7:35 p.m. Drew Cisco (2-3, 3.07) will start for Dayton against South Bend's Brad Allen (0-1, 3.21). Dayton and South Bend will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. All Dragons games can be heard on WONE Radio (980 AM) and via the internet at daytondragons.com and wone.com.

Notes: Robert Ramirez missed the game after being hit by a pitch on the foot on Wednesday. He might play on Friday in South Bend.
