Chiefs Battle Back to Win Game Two Thursday Night

Geneva, IL- The Peoria Chiefs finally broke through on offense and took advantage of six errors to beat the Kane County Cougars 8-2 Thursday night in the back end of a day-night doubleheader. The win snapped a two game losing streak and puts both teams at 19-19 as the Chiefs return home from a 12-game, nine-day roadtrip.

After the Chiefs left runners on base in the first two innings, Kane County scored first in the bottom of the second against Silfredo Garcia. After a fielders' choice saw Jeimer Candelario out at the plate, former Chief Marco Hernandez hit a line drive home run to right field. The blast, his first of the season, put the Cougars on top 2-0 as Carlos Escobar scored from first.

The Chiefs took advantage of the Kane County miscues in the top of the third. Michael Heesch walked Gerwuins Velazco with one out. After a flyout to left, Alex Mejia singled to left and Ildemaro Vargas tied the game 2-2 with a double down the third-base line. Heesch walked Jacob Wilson and the bases were loaded on an error at third base by Candelario, his second of the game. Michael Swinson hit a grounder under the glove of Gioskar Amaya at second base as two runs scored for a 4-2 Chiefs lead. Carson Kelly reached on an single up the middle to score Patrick Wisdom and Swinson came around on an errant throw back in from center field.

With the Chiefs up 6-2, Garcia settled in and did not allow a hit in the third, fourth or fifth innings. He gave up a two-out double in the sixth before the Chiefs added on in the seventh. Facing a position player on the mound, former Chief Bijan Rademacher, Vargas singled to start the seventh. With one out, Wisdom reached on an error for the third time in the game and Swinson walked to load the bases. Kelly lined a pitch off Rademacher and Vargas beat the throw home for a 7-2 lead. A fielders' choice scored Wisdom for an 8-2 lead before Rademacher got out of the inning.

Garcia (1-0) allowed two runs on three hits over six innings in his second start of the season. He struck out one, walked one and allowed a home run. Sam Tuivailala struck out two in a perfect seventh inning in his second appearance of the year.
