Lansing Lugnuts News Release
EASTLAKE, OHIO - A splendid outing from Taylor Cole combined with a four-run fourth inning led the Lansing Lugnuts (14-23) to a 6-2 win over the Lake County Captains (13-24) at Classic Park on Thursday night.
Cole (Win, 2-2) faced the minimum through his first five innings on the mound, only allowing a pair of walks in the fourth frame before Lansing catcher Aaron Munoz threw out both runners trying to steal second base.
With the Lugnuts already on top 5-0, Lake County registered its first hit of the game against Cole in the sixth inning, as Claudio Bautista chopped one through the right side of the infield with one out, breaking up Cole's no-hit bid.
Cole lasted six innings, allowing a pair of runs in his final frame. He gave up three hits, walked two and struck out three, improving to 2-0 in two starts against Lake County this season.
Defense has been an issue for the Captains this season, and an error by LeVon Washington allowed the Lugs to plate their first run in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead.
Lansing came back with four runs in the fourth off Lake County starter Dylan Baker (Loss, 0-3), capped by a two-run single by Dwight Smith, Jr. to put the Lugs ahead 5-0.
Baker lasted 4.1 innings, allowing five runs on four hits. Baker entered the start with six walks in 32.0 innings pitched and he matched that total with six walks on Thursday.
Kellen Sweeney launched a solo homer down the right field line in the eighth inning to put Lansing ahead 6-2, putting a bow on the win.
The Lugnuts now head home to open a seven-game home stand at Cooley Law School Stadium on Friday night. Things start off with a four-game series against the Great Lakes Loons. Lansing will send right-hander Ben White (0-3, 5.09) against Loons' southpaw Miguel Sulbaran (2-1, 4.50) with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
Lansing Lugnuts tickets are available for purchase at lansinglugnuts.com and by calling 517-485-4500, and Lugnuts text alerts are easily accessed by texting LUGNUTS to 313131.
